❓ WA parliamentary question regarding BAC testing of drivers involved in fatal and serious traffic accidents in 2000. Data limitations prevent a complete answer, but statistics are provided for those tested.
AnsweredQoN 984Legislative Assembly
QuestionView source ↗
(1) How many motor vehicle drivers involved in traffic accidents causing death or serious injury were tested to determine their blood alcohol contents (BAC) for the 2000 calendar year?
(2) Of the number tested for BAC, how many returned BAC readings below 0.05%, between 0.05% and 0.08%, between 0.08% and 0.12% and above 0.12%?
(2) Of the number tested for BAC, how many returned BAC readings below 0.05%, between 0.05% and 0.08%, between 0.08% and 0.12% and above 0.12%?

Currently, the Police Casualty Database records a person's Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) reading. The database does not differentiate between the various methods of obtaining a BAC reading, for example Breath Test, Blood and Urine Samples. Where the relevant data field does not contain a BAC reading, it cannot be determined whether a test was conducted or resulted in a negative BAC reading. Accordingly, it is not possible to determine the number of motor vehicle drivers and motorcycle riders involved in fatal and serious injury crashes who underwent BAC testing. (2) Of the 248 motor vehicle drivers and motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes and who were tested for a BAC reading, the following test results are recorded: Drivers and Riders tested for BAC in Fatal Crashes BAC READING NUMBER OF DRIVERS/RIDERS Readings below 0.05% 6 Readings between 0.05% - 0.08% 4 Readings between 0.08% - 0.12% 6 Readings above 0.12% 30 Negative reading or unknown if tested 202 Of the 391 motor vehicle drivers and motorcycle riders involved in serious crashes and who were tested for a BAC reading, the following test results are recorded: Drivers and Riders tested for BAC in Serious Crashes BAC READING NUMBER OF DRIVERS/RIDERS Readings below 0.05% 4 Readings between 0.05% - 0.08% 3 Readings between 0.08% - 0.12% 5 Readings above 0.12% 5 Negative reading or unknown if tested 374 Statistical Notes: (a) The statistical data refers to all motor vehicle drivers and motorcycle riders involved in fatal and serious crashes within Western Australia during the 2000 calendar year. (b) 'Fatal crash' is defined as a road crash where at least one person died within 30 days as result of injuries sustained in the crash. (c) 'Serious injury' is defined as a road crash where injuries sustained are life threatening or likely to result in permanent disability. (d) 'Negative BAC' and 'Negative Reading' are defined as a test resulting in a reading of 0.00% Blood Alcohol Content.
