I thank the member for Geraldton for his hospitality and inviting us to this magnificent town. It is fantastic to come here and see how the member’s hard work is really making this place take off. Several members interjected. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : Why is it that they all get so excited when I get up? They cannot control themselves - particularly my good friend the member for Vasse! Mr Speaker, I crave your protection. It is a really important story to tell. We often talk about the investment that the government has made in Geraldton. However, sometimes the full story is not quite understood; that is, although there is no doubt that this fantastic mineral boom is taking the mid-west forward, without our early commitment to transport infrastructure, this industry would not have taken off in the mid-west. Members can ask all of the five iron ore players in this region how necessary it was that we took those steps early in government to get the Mt Magnet-Leinster road built, to get the Geraldton port enhancement project completed and to build the southern transport corridor. Without that infrastructure that the member for Geraldton, the Premier and the government committed to, we would not have seen Mt Gibson Iron Ltd and the Midwest Corporation Ltd begin to export iron ore. There would not have been a minerals boom in the Geraldton region. Therefore, we are very pleased to be able to work with the community of Geraldton, with the business leaders and with the City of Geraldton to deliver these important projects. Now that we have done that, it is time to move forward to the next stage. Now that we have helped to establish the iron ore industry, we will move forward to Oakajee. This town will go from strength to strength.
