DEPARTMENT
OF EDUCATION — BUDGET REDUCTIONS
868. Hon ED DERMER to the Minister for Education:
I refer to the statement by the Treasurer and the Premier on
26 September 2012, announcing an immediate lowering of the ceiling on full-time
employees and a 1.5 per cent reduction in the 2012–13 budget for
consumables.
(1) What is the
revised FTE ceiling, within the terms of the announcement, in each of the
following service areas —
(a) primary education; and
(b) secondary education?
(2) What was the number of vacancies in each of those service
areas at the time of the announcement?
(3) What is
the dollar figure of the 1.5 per cent cut in purchasing consumables in each of
those service areas?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1) (a)–(b)
The department's FTE ceiling has not been lowered since published in
the 2012–13 budget papers. The FTE ceiling remains at 34 065,
notionally distributed across primary education, 22 542 FTE, and secondary
education, 11 523 FTE.
(2) There were
66 central office vacancies at the time of the announcement. School vacancy
numbers require school-by-school analysis and are therefore not available in
the time frame.
(3) The
financial impact of the 1.5 per cent budget reduction was $5.938 million for
2012–13. The budget reduction is applicable to the Department of
Education in general, and has not been notionally applied against specific
services.
