GREENOUGH REGIONAL
PRISON — CRITICAL INCIDENT REVIEW
1029. Mr Z.R.F. KIRKUP to the Premier:
I refer to the 661 recommendations
from the Corruption and Crime Commission and other oversight agencies that
remain outstanding in the corrective services portfolio and the additional 11
recommendations in yesterday's ''Critical Incident Review into
the events at Greenough Regional Prison on 24–25 July 2018''.
How can we have any faith in the Minister for Corrective Services that he will
address these hundreds of outstanding corruption and management
recommendations, given his complete inaction and historic poor performance?

Prior to answering that question, I have
just noticed in the gallery that Andrew O'Connor from the ABC is back
on duty and I would like to welcome him back to this place. I am pleased to see
he looks so well. That is a bit of Christmas spirit.
The Minister for Corrective Services
informs me the member's figures are incorrect.
Mr Z.R.F. Kirkup : Answer the
question.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Hold on.
Mr Z.R.F. Kirkup : Sorry.
Mr M. McGOWAN : The member premised his question with
statistics that are incorrect. It needs to be drawn to his attention that little
things like detail seem to escape the member's capacity. As I have said
on numerous occasions, the minister is dealing with a difficult portfolio and
working through a range of legacy issues. Members might recall that under the
last government, there were numerous Ministers for Corrective Services. A huge
legacy of overcrowding was left in the prison system. As the Inspector of
Corrective Services identified, a huge error was made when the last government
built the women's prison right next to Greenough prison, separated by a
tennis court fence. When the member stands up here and claims that everything
the former government created should be fixed overnight, all I can say is that,
like the debt it left us, it takes time.
