I thank the member for some notice of the question.
The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Racing and
Gaming.
The Department of Local Government, Industry
Regulation and Safety advises the following.
(1) Regular updates from Racing and Wagering
Western Australia are provided regarding matters relating to greyhound welfare.
(2) The report details the incident and the nature
of the injury sustained and the circumstances surrounding any veterinary
decision.
(3) The minister is briefed on an ad hoc basis
regarding serious injuries and death.
(4) As part of RWWA's broader commitment to
maintaining high welfare standards and continually improving safety for racing
greyhounds, the following actions are taken at Mandurah and Cannington to
prioritise animal welfare. Stewards inspect the racing surface prior to all
race meetings, with additional inspections taking place during race meetings as
required. All greyhounds are examined by the on-track veterinarian upon arrival
at the racecourse. This independent assessment ensures each greyhound is fit to
race and provides an additional layer of welfare oversight.
