I refer to dot point 13 on page 1010 of the budget papers and ask will the Minister provide additional information on what the Great Southern Development Commission’s role is in directly assisting regional employers in addressing skills shortages through nominations to the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme and the Regional Temporary Employees to Australia visa subclauses?

The Great Southern Development Commission is gazetted as a Regional Certifying Body (RCB) by the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA). The role of certification broadly involves working with regional employers, who have been unable fill skilled positions through the local or national labour market, to access the temporary and permanent visa subclasses and to assist them with the nomination and visa application processes. Issues that are routinely addressed include determining that the position is genuine and full time, providing evidence of a trade level or diploma qualification and that Australian employment laws and remuneration standards can be met. The Commission also undertakes a level of awareness raising, concerning these and other schemes, with regional business, industry and local government.
