Under the funding committed under the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality bilateral agreement, $1.2 million will be used for a catchment demonstration initiative project in the Wallatin Creek catchment project near Doodlakine. Will the minister please advise - (1) The date on which the trials are expected to start and finish for each element of the Doodlakine project, including - (a) large-scale engineering and water management systems; (b) perennial pastures; (c) oil mallees and salt bush; and (d) uses for excess water? (2) What sort of large-scale engineering and water management systems will be trialed as part of the Doodlakine project? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank Hon Frank Hough for some notice of the question. I was actually asked at one important point during the decision-making process on the selection of the Wallatin Creek site as one of the four catchment demonstration initiative sites whether that posed a difficulty for me in terms of a conflict of interest. I hasten to assure the House that no question of conflict of interest arises in respect of either the answerer of the question or, I am sure, the asker of the question. (1) The four components are expected to be phased in during the next three years and completed during the next five years. The project has not yet completed its implementation works plan, so intended start and completion dates are not yet known, although these matters will be known very soon. (2) The location and nature of the proposed surface water management systems - mainly grade banks and dams - will be determined during the planning phase in consultation with individual landholders.
