I thank the member for Vasse for her
question and also acknowledge that just a few months ago I was in the member
for Vasse's area meeting with senior citizens in Busselton. It was a
great morning meeting with a number of senior citizens, and the member for
Vasse is a great member representing her community.
As was pointed out by the member,
this week is Seniors Week in Western Australia. It is a fantastic week to
celebrate seniors in our community, as grandparents, grandcarers, employers,
employees, friends, neighbours and mentors. All seniors in our community do a
fantastic job to support the whole community. If I were to wear the hat of the
minister for volunteering only, I would not be able to resource a lot of
community organisations without the seniors in our community and the fantastic
work they do.
I mentioned in this house last month
Olly Pickett, a volunteer from Wheelchairs for Kids, who has been made a senior
of the year. Olly is a fantastic ambassador for seniors in our community.
Our government is very supportive of
seniors in the community, with over 350 000 Seniors Card holders in WA accessing
those benefits. It is the most generous Seniors Card in Australia and is very
important.
It is also very important that today
I went to Have A Go Day at Burswood, which is a fantastic event. The more than 200
stalls had completely sold out of information for seniors. More importantly,
the theme of the day is to have a go. The idea is to try some different events,
and there was everything from square dancing to rock climbing, playing
PlayStation games and all types of events that seniors could get involved in
and get information on about seniors in Western Australia. It is very important
that they can do that.
Also events are happening everywhere
throughout Western Australia. It is great to see 78 events happening throughout
Western Australia, and a lot in regional Western Australia, which is great to
see, helped through my department, the Department of Local Government and
Communities, and Lotterywest, and administered by Council on the Ageing Western
Australia to help put that together to make sure that we can celebrate Seniors Week
in Western Australia.
