MITCHELL FREEWAY — WIDENING
722. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the
Minister for Transport:
I refer to the widening of the
Mitchell Freeway, southbound.
(1) Why was the
decision made to progress with the widening of the entire section from Hodges
Drive, Joondalup, to the Vincent Street exit in one uninterrupted operation
rather than complete smaller sections of the freeway at a time?
(2) When did the widening commence?
(3) When is it expected to be
completed?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by
the Minister for Transport.
(1) Three
separate projects are underway to upgrade the Mitchell Freeway southbound:
widening between Hodges Drive and Hepburn Avenue; the Stephenson Avenue
extension; and the smart freeway Mitchell Freeway southbound. To realise the
benefits of these upgrades, it was deemed more practical to align all three
projects as closely as possible, rather than stagger delivery.
(2) The first of these projects to
commence was the widening works, which began in July 2021.
(3) It is
anticipated that the smart freeway will go live mid-2024, and that the
Stephenson Avenue project will be complete at the end of 2024.
