I am advised by the Western Australian College of Teaching as follows:
(1) Over the period 1 January 2011 to 24 June 2011, the memberships of 476 teachers expired and their names were removed from the register of teachers.
(2)-(3) Of the 476 teachers referred to in (1), 102 teachers have applied for membership and of these, 98 have been reinstated to the register of teachers. The applications of 4 others are pending submission of documents needed to finalise the process. Please note that teachers may also elect to allow their membership to lapse.
(4) Under section 41(1) of the
Western Australian College of Teaching Act 2004
members of the College must apply for the renewal of membership before it expires and if an application is submitted the College must be satisfied that the applicant meets the requirements of section 41(3). Almost all of the 476 teachers whose names were removed from the register did not submit an application for renewal before their membership expired. Some submitted applications with insufficient documentation to satisfy section 41(3). Prior to having their names removed from the register of teachers, all received a minimum of four communications from the College over a minimum period of eight months.
(5) Of the 102 teachers who have sought to have their names restored to the register of teachers:
(5)(a) The longest period a teacher has not been on the register has been 45 days.
(5)(b) The average period off the register has been 6 days.
(5)(c) The shortest period off the register has been two hours.
