STATE
BUDGET 2012–13 — FREMANTLE TRAFFIC BRIDGE
259. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the Minister for Transport:
I have a supplementary question. In the Fremantle–Cockburn Gazette of 8 June 2010,
the member for Fremantle described the bridge as ''an accident waiting
to happen''. If an accident happens, will the minister take
responsibility?

I am not aware of those particular comments, but I will tell
members about one thing we are doing. Last year the lighter barge, the barge
that carries fuel around the harbour—I think it is called the MV Parmelia ,
but I could be wrong—came free and struck one of the pylons on the rail
bridge. I am sure the member for Midland would be aware that the traffic bridge
sits to the east of the rail bridge. Therefore, on the balance of probabilities
the rail bridge will be the one impacted. Members will notice additional moneys
are being spent in this year's budget to put in additional protection
for the pylons of the rail bridge and therefore, by extension, since that will
be the buffer, to protect the traffic bridge.
On top of that, this is a very important part of both the
road and rail transport link between the port of Fremantle and the industrial
suburbs.
Mrs M.H. Roberts :
You've neglected it for four years.
Mr T.R. BUSWELL : I
have not neglected anything for four years, member for Midland. We will sit
down with my good friend minister ''Albo'' to go through these
details later this year.
