QuestionView source ↗
This is the question I did not ask yesterday, so the minister has received notice. (1) How many positions in the South West Area Health Service are currently vacant or filled in an acting capacity? (2) Why are these positions currently not being filled? (3) In regional and rural Western Australia, including the south west, will there be any staff reductions as part of the budget cuts in the portfolio? Mr J.A. McGINTY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. It has enabled me to gain the figures he seeks. (1)-(2) There are approximately 1 124 full-time equivalent employees in the South West Area Health Service. Of these, 17 positions are vacant and 68 are filled on an acting basis. There will always be some vacancies and staff employed on an acting basis. However, I hope the number will be reduced below the current level; and central to that process will be the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer of the South West Area Health Service. That is being finalised as we speak. That appointment will enable a number of other positions beneath that level to be filled on a permanent basis; also, any newly created roles will be able to be authorised and filled as a consequence of that appointment. (3) As I indicated in answer to parliamentary question without notice 1034, it is constantly necessary to look at whether we are getting value for the dollars we spend in the health system. No area of the health system, including regional and rural health and the South West Area Health Service, or any other area of the health service for that matter, will be quarantined from that process.
