A parliamentary question regarding the Perth to Bunbury highway project and the AusLink agreement. The Minister's response is evasive and resorts to personal attacks and political point-scoring, only vaguely addressing the core issues.

PERTH TO BUNBURY HIGHWAY PROJECT
I refer to the traffic congestion facing holiday-makers this Easter as they travel south through Mandurah, and to the Perth to Bunbury highway project, which includes the Peel deviation. (1) Did the minister accept the Prime Minister’s offer of an additional $20 million to commence construction of the project by 2006? (2) Did the minister sign the AusLink agreement on the understanding that the federal government’s offer of $170 million was on the condition that the project be completed by 2009? (3) Given that this $170 million is dependent on the state government meeting these time lines, can the minister tell the people of Western Australia whether the agreement she was a signatory to will be fulfilled by this government? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

(1)-(3) I am really surprised at the level of research, or lack thereof, that the member does. I have made it very clear publicly - I have made statements in the Parliament and I have put out press releases - that the government has signed the AusLink agreement after it landed on an agreement with the federal government - Ms K. Hodson-Thomas interjected. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : I would love the member for Carine to still be the opposition spokesperson on roads, because at least she did a bit of work and research, not like, I would not use the word “drone”, some of the other non-female members of the opposition - the boy’s club. Mr T.R. Buswell : We’ll be marching over and talking to you in a minute. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : Great! The Deputy Leader of the Opposition was on bended knee before me earlier. He can repeat that action. It was entirely pleasurable from my point of view! Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : The Deputy Leader of the Opposition wanted advice on what faction he would have been in had he been a member of the Labor Party. He described to me the persons he knew and sought advice on what faction that would have put him in. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : I came to the conclusion that he probably would have be in the broad left. Several members interjected. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : The Attorney General is nodding his head. Several members interjected. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : I have made it very clear in public statements, in both this place and the media after the government got an extra $55 million, that it had signed the AusLink agreement. I have made it very clear that the government is working towards a timetable in which the Peel deviation, the Perth to Bunbury highway, will be commenced by the end of this year. Our latest advice indicates that that timetable seems to be achievable. I make the point that just yesterday the opposition spokesperson on planning and infrastructure said that he thought the Perth to Mandurah rail line was premature. Now the ex-spokesperson has hopped up and said that we needed it earlier. Members opposite are all over the place.
