With reference to schooling in the Town of Port Hedland, I ask:
(a) what steps has the Department of Education taken to prepare for the expected influx of families to the town as a result of resource sector expansion plans;
(b) based on BHP Billiton's immediate expansion plans alone, over 700 homes will be built in Port and South Hedland over the next few years to house residential employees, are Port Hedland schools prepared for the influx of students this expansion will bring; and
(c) with the exponential increase set to follow on from BHP Billiton's planned Outer Harbour expansion, will the Government have in place plans to build new schools to cater for that additional influx of families to the town?

(a) The Department of Education maintains regular contact with the developers and the Town of Port Hedland to monitor planning for the residential growth occurring in the area. The Department uses information from a variety of sources, including the Department of Planning and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, to estimate the likely impact of large scale increases in residential development upon existing public schools.
(b)-(c) Currently four primary schools and one secondary school service the localities of Port Hedland and South Hedland. These are Port Hedland Primary School, Baler Primary School, Cassia Primary School, South Hedland Primary School and Hedland Senior High School.
The Department of Education is satisfied that the existing public schools in the Town of Port Hedland will be able to accommodate the additional students generated by the planned resource development.
