POLICE — BUNBURY
I refer to the recently published “Estimates of Crime Statistics WA State Electoral Divisions: March Quarter 1999-September Quarter 2008” published by the Parliamentary Library of Western Australia, which shows that the number of offences in Bunbury increased from 96 in May 2008 to 233 in September 2008; in the last quarter Bunbury’s crime rate increased by a frightening 7.6 per cent; graffiti and assault offences are on the rise in Bunbury; and Bunbury now ranks in the top six highest crime electorates in Western Australia, which is a significant rise of 13 ranking places since the last quarter. I also refer to the Premier’s 2008 state election commitment to increase police numbers in Bunbury. (1) How many additional sworn police officer full-time equivalent positions has the Barnett government provided to Bunbury since it was elected to government in September 2008? (2) When will the additional sworn police officers that were promised by the now Premier at the 2008 state election be provided to Bunbury? (3) How many additional sworn police officers will be provided to Bunbury to combat the significant increase in crime? (4) Will the government make a commitment to immediately increase funding and resources to Bunbury police to address this increasing trend in the Bunbury crime rate? (5) If yes to (4), will the government specify what additional resources and funding will be provided to Bunbury police and when the Bunbury police can expect to receive this additional support? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) Nil. (2)-(3) The deployment of police officers is an ongoing process. WA Police undertakes continual monitoring of policing services in each police district, taking into account a range of factors to ensure a responsive policing service is provided to the areas of greatest need. Individual police stations are also subject to workload reviews on a regular basis to ensure that the available resources have been appropriately allocated. (4)-(5) The Commissioner of Police is responsible for the allocation of police services statewide and allocates resources accordingly.
