a) The Kitchener Park site, on which Inner City College is being constructed, is approximately 2.13 hectares. The school will also have access to Subiaco Oval and adjoining areas, which will include playing courts at approximately 2.4 hectares in size. Once the stage 2 facilities are completed in 2023, the site will have the capacity to accommodate 2 000 students and approximately 180 staff, 130 of whom will be teaching staff.
Inner-city schooling is typically provided in high-density environments where limited space is available. Planning for Perth’s new Inner City College has taken into consideration the surrounding environment and site limitations. The school has been designed to incorporate multi-storey buildings to maximise available land and provide for students the full range of general and specialist learning facilities and external social spaces.
Current inner-city schools include Perth Modern School, Highgate Primary School, North Perth Primary School, West Leederville Primary School, Mount Hawthorn Primary School, Victoria Park Primary School and Inglewood Primary School, all of which are located on restricted sites.
b) A typical senior high school site in Western Australia is 10 hectares, of which 25% is utilised as playing fields.
c) Churchlands Senior High School is approximately 10.9 hectares in size, 27% of which is utilised as playing fields. Shenton College is approximately 13.5 hectares in size, 10% of which is utilised as playing fields.
d) The school has a unique inner-city location, very close to the train station and bus routes so a large amount of parking space is not required. Inner City College includes 108 on-site general car bays and two ACROD bays on the lower ground level. In addition there will be a student drop off and pick up area, visitor parking and space for bus services on Coghlan Road. As part of the METRONET expansion, train frequency at West Leederville and Subiaco will be increasing to a train every five minutes during peak periods by 2021.
e) Churchlands Senior High School currently has 2 718 students, 170 (full-time equivalent) teaching staff and 335 car bays. Shenton College currently has 2 080 students, 132 (full-time equivalent) teaching staff and will have 329 car bays once the stage 2 redevelopment is completed in December 2018.
