The Department of Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) has been provided $1,185,198 in 2015/16 as a partner organisation in the delivery of the Response to Suicide and Self‑Harm in Schools program (School Response). The School Response program is a priority under the state-wide suicide prevention strategy, Suicide Prevention 2020.
Delivered in partnership with the Department of Education (DoE) and Youth Focus, the School Response program provides support to schools across the State in preventing and responding to incidents of self-harm and suicide.
CAMHS operates only in the Perth metropolitan and Peel region, not in the South West.
Through the School Response program, Youth Focus has been funded $650,000 in 2015/16 to provide specialist mental health youth clinical services outside of the Perth metropolitan area, including the South West. This is additional to the existing Western Australian Country Health Services (WACHS) mental health clinicians operating in regional areas.
Youth Focus has a regional office located in Bunbury and has existing partnerships through the School Response program with most schools in the region.
The Minister for Mental Health recently announced a $1.8 million investment for at-risk youth in regional Western Australia. This initiative will fund specialist mental health teams to work with 16 to 24 year olds in the South West and Pilbara regions.
