TRAINING, 2001-02 BUDGET
I refer the minister to the Premier’s announcement last week that the training budget would be increased by $8 million in the next financial year. (1) Will the minister confirm that in the midyear financial review released in December last year the Government announced that it was deferring $12 million from the training budget? (2) Will the minister now admit that the $8 million announced last week as an increase still leaves the training budget at least $4 million worse off, and more in real terms, than in 2001-02? Mr KOBELKE

(1)-(2) I am glad to hear that the member for Darling Range is keen to get a copy of the budget documents, as are many people. He will have the opportunity on Thursday to check the various points he inquired about. He is correct in saying that $12 million was transferred. That amount related to the worker assistance program in the forestry package and was transferred because the uptake of that program was slower than we thought it would be. Therefore, the money was not needed in this year’s budget. There was some realignment of that. The member was correct to the extent to which he alluded to that point in his question. In terms of overall issues with the training budget, I will be happy to answer questions after Thursday, when the Treasurer will present the budget.
