The police were committed to trying to meet the three per cent efficiency dividend. The member is fully aware that part of the savings that were being looked at was 10 per cent of the overall fleet costs of all government agencies. At the time, it was made quite clear to the Treasurer that there was no way we could, in any way, compromise front-line vehicles. Mr E.S. Ripper : I think you’ve got the wrong embarrassment—that’s another embarrassment! Mr R.F. JOHNSON : Was the member for Girrawheen asking about the $6 million? Ms M.M. Quirk : I am asking about the $8 million that it was said would be saved as a result of the changes to the hoon laws. Mr R.F. JOHNSON : It will be very difficult to assess whether that has been achieved until we get to the end of the year. To the police’s credit, I believe enormous savings have been made that have not affected front-line delivery of services whatsoever. We have more police officers out on the roads than the former government ever dreamed of, and we have more vehicles out on the roads. We did have a cutback in some of the non-front-line vehicles, but they were administrative cuts. The member for Girrawheen should get ready with her next press release, and I am sure it will be treated in the same way.
