Attorney General representing the Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to question without notice 318 asked on 24 March
2015.
(1) Against what criteria was the art program deemed to be
non-essential?
(2) Of the programs still available —
(a) how long is each program; and
(b) how many times is each program
offered in a calendar year?
(3) How many
lecturers are employed on contracts with the Department of Corrective Services
to deliver the existing programs?
(4) How many prisoners are enrolled in each program as at 25 March
2015?

On behalf of the Minister for Corrective Services, I thank
the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The
accredited art program is considered not essential when prisoners have access
to recreational art activities. Accredited art programs have weak links to the
employment market and as such education staff shifted the focus to
non-accredited access out of the education centre.

adult basic education; 12 months, certificate II horticulture traineeship and
certificate II hospitality traineeship; 20 weeks, certificate II conservation
and land management, certificate I hospitality and certificate II engineering;
and 10 weeks, certificate II construction, certificate I industrial skills
welding, certificate I health and beauty, certificate I information technology,
and certificate II laundry operations.
(b) Continuous,
adult basic education, certificate II horticulture traineeship, certificate II
engineering, certificate II hospitality traineeship; four times per year,
certificate II conservation and land management, certificate II construction,
certificate I industrial skills welding, certificate I health and beauty,
certificate I hospitality, certificate I information technology and certificate
II laundry operations.
(3) Six staff
at the Greenough education centre are on contract with the Department of
Corrective Services.
(4) Adult
basic education, 75; certificate II conservation and land management, eight;
certificate II construction, six; certificate I industrial skills welding,
seven; certificate I health and beauty, 10; certificate I hospitality, 14;
certificate I information technology, 12; certificate II horticulture
traineeships, two; certificate II hospitality traineeship, one; certificate II
