I refer to an article in today’s The West Australian entitled “Law to bar paedophile contact” which states that the law the Attorney General proposes would prevent paedophiles from lurking around schools and childcare centres. In light of these proposed new laws, I ask - (1) Why did the Attorney General fail to assist Mr Leo McVeigh and his parents who visited him in his Fremantle office concerning allegations of sexual assault, including a brutal rape of Mr McVeigh when he was a child by a former Catholic priest who is personally known to the Attorney General? (2) Why is it that after the McVeigh family expressed their concerns to the Attorney General that this man could still be a threat and a danger to children, he took no known action on their behalf? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(2) Simply, the allegations made by the member for Nedlands are blatantly untrue and misleading. The McVeighs came and saw me. I raised their matters in the appropriate forums and I gave them advice on how to proceed. Ms S.E. Walker interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, member for Nedlands. Mr J.A. McGINTY: This was while the Liberal Party was in government in this State - back in the 1990s. The police investigated the matter and found no basis upon which to take the matter further.
