I note that the minister intends to travel around the State next week to promote the Buy Local campaign and to obtain the opinion of local communities on that campaign. I also note that the majority of the towns he intends to visit are, understandably, in his electorate. Is the minister prepared to add to his itinerary the towns of Manjimup, Pemberton, Nannup and Northcliffe in view of the dire need for some form of government spending in those towns to offset the negative financial results of the Government’s policy on old-growth forests? Hon TOM STEPHENS

I thank the member for his question without notice. I will undertake some consultation next week on the Buy Local policy. That will fulfil the commitment the Labor Party made as part of its election policy to review the Buy Local policy after 12 months of operation. I indicated in a press release of 15 October that I intended to conduct that review. I have indicated that at this stage I will go from Wyndham, where the issue was raised by local people during my time in opposition, to Kununurra, Derby, Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha and Carnarvon. I will then travel to Esperance - Hon Peter Foss: I have read the press release. That is why I asked if you would go to those other four towns. Hon TOM STEPHENS: I know that I am going to Esperance, Albany, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Northam, Mandurah, Narrogin, Bunbury and Collie, and will then have two sessions in Perth. Members will note that a large number of those locations are outside my electorate. I am more than happy to take the member’s suggestion on board. I would like to take the opportunity to discuss the suggestion with a number of my ministerial and parliamentary colleagues who are responsible for those areas. I would appreciate the advice of my colleague the Leader of the House. I am sure that the member’s suggestion would obtain his support because he is interested in those areas. However, I should also quickly check the suggestion with the Minister for the South West. I will try to accommodate the suggestion that has been made.
