I refer to school aged children/youths who have been released from immigration detention centres or alternative places of detention in Western Australia since January 2011, and I ask -
(1) Is the Department of Education aware of any such children/youths?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) If yes to (1), how many is the department aware of?
(4) Of these in (3), how many -
(a) have not enrolled in a school; and
(b) are not currently attending school?
(5) For those children/youths in (4), has the Department conducted any enquiries to ascertain why they are not attending school?
(6) If yes to (5), what are the findings from these enquiries?
(7) Does the lack of a permanent home address impact on the eligibility of these children/youth to enrol in a school?
(8) Has the Department developed any strategies to assist these children to enrol in, and attend, school?
(9) If yes to (8), what strategies have been developed?
(10) If no to (8), why not?

(1) I am advised that this information is not made available to the Department of Education by the Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
(2) School-aged children are released from immigration detention centres or alternative places of detention with a variety of visa types. These visas do not identify children who have been released from detention centres.
(3)-(10) Not applicable.
