GORGON GAS PROJECT 1023. Hon PAUL LLEWELLYN to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for the Environment: I refer to ministerial statement 748 concerning the Gorgon gas development. (1) If further survey and identification of those short-range endemics and subterranean fauna species, which have previously only been located on the gas treatment plant site, as required by condition 11.1, finds that some or all of those species are indeed restricted to the gas treatment plant site, will the Gorgon development proceed? (2) If yes to (1), why and on what basis? Hon SALLY TALBOT

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The Minister for the Environment has provided the following response - (1) The minister is confident that further surveying by the proponent will confirm that the species exist elsewhere on Barrow Island. (2) In determining the appeals on Environmental Protection Authority bulletin 1221, the previous Minister for the Environment reached the view that it is likely that the subterranean fauna and short-range endemic species only found within the development footprint will, with further surveying, be found elsewhere on Barrow Island. Ministerial condition 11 is consistent with this determination and requires the proponent to undertake the further surveys.
