CAGED EGG PRODUCTION
1202. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the Minister for Agriculture and
Food:
I
refer to the Australian animal welfare standards and guidelines for poultry and statements attributed to the minister in the media regarding the
phase-out of conventional cages by 2032.
(1) Has a definitive decision been
made by the minister in respect of the 2032 time frame?
(2) How many egg producers were consulted, and how
many times did the minister meet with the Commercial Egg Producers
Association of WA or Egg Farmers of Australia as part of the decision-making
process?
(3) Has an assessment been
undertaken on —
(a) the impact of banning cage eggs
in WA on the affordability of eggs for WA families; and
(b) the extent to
which WA egg farmers will be disadvantaged, given other states are considering
a later time frame for phase-out?
