CAT ACT
869. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the
Minister for Local Government:
I refer to the Cat Act 2011.
(1) Noting that a
statutory review of the act was conducted in 2019, when will the next review
commence?
(2) Has the state
government committed to stakeholders that a review of the Dog and Cat Acts is
imminent?
(3) Noting that
the 2019 review found strong support for cat confinement to be implemented
statewide in legislation rather than through individual local laws to provide
consistency among local governments, what is the government's position
on this recommendation?
(4) Will the
minister please table the government response to the 2019 statutory review of
the act?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided by the
Minister for Local Government.
(1) The
Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries is currently
prioritising the implementation of laws
designed to stop puppy farming, which includes establishing the PetsWA
centralised registration system to improve the registration and tracking
of dogs and cats across WA. The next review of the Cat Act 2011 is expected to
progress further in due course.
(2) No.
(3) When a review
of the Cat Act 2011 progresses, feedback will be sought from the community and
stakeholders to ensure any reforms are aligned with broad community
expectations.
(4) The report on
the 2019 statutory review of the Cat Act 2011 and the Dog Amendment Act 2013
was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday, 27 November 2019.
