Housing—Supply
883. Hon Anthony Spagnolo to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Housing and Works:
I refer to the
latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showing that Western Australia
remains well short of the annual pace needed to meet its share of the national
housing accord target.
(1) Has the government conducted any modelling on
the impact of this shortfall on housing affordability in Western Australia and,
if so, will the minister table it?
(2) If not, why not?
(3) What is the government's current forecast for
the number of new home completions required each year from 2025–26
onwards to meet the accord target and clear the existing backlog?
(4) Has the government assessed the impact of this
shortfall on average build times and waiting periods for Western Australia
households seeking a new home and, if so, will the minister table those
findings?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. I provide the following on
behalf of the Minister for Housing and Works.
(1)–(4) The 1.2 million housing accord
target includes private market housing in addition to the government-led social
and affordable housing. The state government has invested a record $5.8 billion
in housing-related initiatives since 2021, including to deliver 5,800 new
social homes. The number of homes built in Western Australia over the 2024–25
financial year grew to 22,602, up 25.1% in annual terms, which was the
strongest growth in the nation. The number of homes built for the year was the
highest in eight years, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data. The
chief economist of the Master Builders Australia stated in June 2025 that Western
Australia is the only state on track to meet its housing accord targets. The
state government has additionally committed to the National Planning Reform
Blueprint to deliver planning and land use reforms that will accelerate housing
supply and be more responsive to housing diversity and demand.
