Currently, there are almost 80 000 computer workstations in use in Western Australian Government schools. The minimum expected ratio of computers to students is 1:5 in secondary schools and 1:10 in primary schools. Generally, all schools have exceeded these minimum targets. (2-3) Schools have access to centrally provided support services to repair and maintain those computers used for administrative purposes. In the curriculum areas, schools can elect to either make provision for technical support resources within their establishment, or use their allocation of funds to contract support services from a panel of centrally endorsed, commercial support providers. (4) Any complaints relating to the provision or quality of IT support services are investigated and managed in accordance within the service management provisions of the relevant contracts. (5) In addition to the central technical support services provided by the Department, the range of support mechanisms mentioned above in response to question 2 have now been put in place. As high quality, standardised computer equipment is acquired and implemented across schools, the requirement for high levels of technical support will be reduced and schools will enjoy improved support services.
