NATIVE FOREST —
LOGGING — TRANSITION PACKAGE — AUSTRALIAN WORKERS'
UNION
148. Hon STEVE MARTIN to the minister representing the
Minister for Forestry:
I refer to an article in The
West Australian , published on 15 March, stating that the state government
is paying $200 000 to the Australian Workers' Union for providing
advice and support to forestry workers.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that the $200 000 comes from the $50 million transition fund
that was created to directly support businesses, workers and communities?
(2) Can the
minister confirm whether the decision to make the $200 000 payment to the union
was a recommendation of the native forest transition group?
(3) If no to (2),
can the minister confirm whether the decision to make the $200 000 payment to
the union was discussed during the native forest transition group meetings?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question. The following information has been provided by the Minister
for Forestry.
(1) Yes. It is
entirely appropriate that workers are provided professional industrial advice
and support through the transition process. The Australian Workers'
Union is the registered industrial representative of the native forestry
workforce and, as such, is the most appropriate organisation to provide that
advice and support through the transition.
(2) The native
forest transition group does not make recommendations for payments or funding
allocations of the $50 million transition funding.
(3) Yes.
