PILBARA
CITIES INITIATIVE — SPOILBANK MARINA PROJECT
874. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the
Minister for Regional Development:
Can the minister please explain the significance of the
recent announcement of the Liberal–National government's
Spoilbank marina project in Port Hedland?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for North West Central for the question—someone
who advocates strongly for the northern part of the state and it is pleasing
that we have someone who actually does some yards on the ground. Just recently,
I was in Port Hedland with both the Premier and the member for Pilbara, the
Minister for Housing, and we announced the Spoilbank marina project for Port
Hedland. Members in this house will certainly recall the commitment that this
government made to the Pilbara Cities initiative, with some very significant
investments in Port Hedland, including the South Hedland stadium, the South
Hedland Aquatic Centre, the Gratwick Aquatic Centre, JD Hardie Youth Zone, Matt
Dann Theatre and Cinema, and of course support for industrial estates including
Hedland Junction and the broader Wedgefield industrial estate. It also
delivered on the affordable housing strategy in a part of the state that had a level
of growth that was putting housing, and affordable housing in particular, under
significant pressure. That came under the Pilbara Cities initiative. The house
will remember that in 2012 during a cabinet meeting up there, we supported
building the Spoilbank marina. There were a number of necessary changes to the
scope of that project, which meant it had to come back to cabinet. Very
pleasingly, we have been able to land on a $150 million project, including $72 million
from royalties for regions, $40 million from the consolidated fund and also $40
million from the Town of Port Hedland for a project that will fundamentally
transform Port Hedland.
Mr M.P. Murray interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Collie–Preston!
Mr D.T. REDMAN :
And why should that not occur in a place that is the epicentre of not only the
economy of Western Australia but also our national economy? In fact, the wealth
out of that town is probably building similar centres on the east coast. The
project will include up to 150 boat pens, a two-lane boat ramp and trailer
parking, space for boat repair and service facilities.
Mr
M.P. Murray interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Collie–Preston!
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : It will also include sites for cafes, restaurants and bars on
the foreshore and landscaped public spaces. I am looking forward to the Leader
of the Opposition's commitment to the Pilbara because I am sure it will
be very, very light on.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : That is enough!
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : It includes a caravan park site and a cultural and community
centre. We are extremely proud of the Pilbara Cities initiative. We are
extremely proud of the commitment that we have made to the part of the state
where people can get a little back from the huge, huge contribution that they
make to our state and our nation.
Mr
P.B. Watson interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Albany! Are you finished, minister?
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : No, not quite Mr Speaker.
The
SPEAKER : Ten seconds!
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : Thanks, Mr Speaker. This project gives a huge amount of
confidence for investment into the part of the state that is making such a big
contribution, which is something this side of the house is extremely proud of.
