I refer to comments made by the Leader of the Opposition that nothing is happening in Western Australia at the moment and no major projects are taking place. Will the Premier inform the House whether this is the case? Dr G.I. GALLOP

I must confess that the Leader of the Opposition is a little preoccupied at the moment. Perhaps he has not noticed the enormous momentum in Western Australia today. I believe he has noticed the momentum from the members for Kalgoorlie and Murdoch, but he has not noticed the momentum that exists in Western Australia today. The Leader of the Opposition once again has his facts wrong. This is a feature of the Leader of the Opposition; he always has the facts wrong. He had the facts wrong about the Bloffwitch affair when he came into this Parliament, he had the facts wrong about his own position on Barrow Island and he had the facts wrong about the public funding issue in Western Australia. He always has the facts wrong. Obviously, this is a matter that will be very important for the people of Western Australia when they make a choice at the next election. In answer to the Leader of the Opposition’s comment that nothing is happening in WA, the facts are that the economy grew by 3.9 per cent last year, compared with a national growth of 2.8 per cent. Business investment grew by a staggering 22.3 per cent, which is higher than the national average of 17.5 per cent. Business investment in the last three years of the previous Government fell by 3.6 per cent, 13 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively. That was the last Government’s record. Now things are moving in Western Australia. This is the State in which the Leader of the Opposition says nothing is happening. Some of the projects going on are the construction of a $600 million ammonia plant on the Burrup; the construction of Rio Tinto Ltd’s $400 million HIsmelt project; the award of a $550 million patrol boat contract to Austal Ships Pty Ltd; tourism projects worth $556 million; in-principle support for the Gorgon gas project; and a $3.5 billion capital works project throughout the State, including the deepening of the Geraldton port, the extension of the metropolitan rail to Clarkson in the northern suburbs, and major expansions to ports, electricity and roads in Western Australia. Mr C.J. Barnett: Roads? Dr G.I. GALLOP: There is an expansion in road expenditure. The Leader of the Opposition might like to live in his fantasy world and project to the people of Western Australia a misleading picture of what is happening about him and his colleagues, but he has been caught out. Western Australia is doing well. The Leader of the Opposition cannot see it because he is too preoccupied with the internal division in his own party.
