The Minister Replied:
This response is based on an estimate of funds identified from the Health budget for ongoing health research and development and for specifically funded innovations.
It is emphasised the ongoing funding in relation to Teaching Hospitals is a best estimate as the HDWA currently does not discreetly identify all research and Development expenditure but it is encompassed in a wider category of teaching training, development and research.
Studies to define a methodology to accurately measure the cost of teaching, training, development and research are being commissioned to improve the information in this very important area.
Teaching Hospitals also receive funds from various sources including funds distributed by the National Health Medical and Research Council and income through their research foundations.
This response is restricted to funds provided in the Health budgets, which is in accordance with the question asked:
(i) $33.0 million
(ii) $35.7 million
