HOPMAN CUP
(1) Can the minister confirm that, to date, no agreement has been finalised to secure the Hopman Cup? (2) Can she confirm that her best guesstimate is August 2007, just four months before the event is held? (3) If this is the case, what is the cause of the delay - is it her or her agency’s incompetence or is it the government’s failure to handle major projects in Western Australia? (4) Can she confirm that Western Australian taxpayers will have to foot the bill for the first $2 million if any losses are incurred by the organisers? Ms S.M. McHALE

I thank the member for her question. (1)-(4) Last week there was a very fruitful meeting between Tourism Western Australia and the Hopman Cup organisers, at which the negotiations about the contract were very close to finalisation. I will be very happy to report to the house when those negotiations are finalised and when we have a contract. However, the negotiations last week were very fruitful and very positive indeed. This is a very significant event for Western Australia.
