(1)–(2) I thank the member
for that question. Of course, building and improving our sporting
infrastructure around the state is a core goal of this government.
Ms Sandra Brewer interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Cottesloe, I
am going to call you for the first time. You do not interject on questions when
they are being answered. Thank you.
Ms Rita Saffioti: As members know, we
are delivering record sporting infrastructure across the state—throughout
the suburbs, throughout the regions and throughout the city. Of course, one of
the most iconic venues of the state is the WACA ground, which is not only an iconic
sporting ground, but also, really, a tourism venue. As we know, many people who
visit WA want to see and experience the WACA because of their years watching
incredible cricket on TV. As part of this project—the WACA
redevelopment—we have of course seen the incorporation and production
of a new high-performance centre, the new bowling nets and services and supports
for regional Western Australians who visit the WACA
and some of our regional talent as well. Very, very soon, the WACA will be hosting
a day-night women's test match between Australia and India. I know the Leader
of the Opposition loves women's sport, so I cannot wait to see his support for
that game!
We are seeing the
new aquatic facility, members. It is a brand-new aquatic facility at the
Western Australian Cricket Association to service the local and wider
community. This is something we have been passionate about from day one—having
a community aquatic facility as part of that WACA redevelopment. Of course, it
was a project that the Leader of the Opposition opposed and opposed and
opposed.
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Opposed and opposed and opposed. It
was actually the Leader of the Opposition, when he was Perth's mayor, who came
out and opposed that community aquatic facility. He said it should be bold and
visionary. He said:
Quite frankly, the corner of the WACA
in between a light tower and the last row of the seats with no shade was not
that sort of facility
The Leader of the
Opposition opposed the WACA facility. I cannot wait until it opens because I
reckon the Leader of the Opposition will be there, just like he was at the
State of Origin, pushing the kiddies out of the way, wanting to get down those
slides, enjoying that lovely swimming pool and watching a bit of Sheffield
Shield cricket at the same time! This is a community facility. I am so proud it
took a state government to get involved to deliver something in the City of
Perth as opposed to a mayor who did nothing for that city for five years.
