NEWMAN HOSPITAL
30. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Minister for Health:
I refer to the rebuild of Newman Hospital and the member for
Pilbara's comments on ABC North West radio last week that tenders will
go out before the end of the year and construction will start next year.
(1) Will the
minister today confirm the member for Pilbara's time line and commit to
having the rebuild completed before the 2021 election?
(2) Will the
minister today explain why Labor's election promise to provide $1.3 million
for renal chairs at Newman Hospital remains unfunded?

(1)–(2)
I thank the member for the question. It is important that we continue to
maintain a strong program in our regional hospitals to ensure that they serve
the people in those communities, so they get the care they need in the
communities in which they live. I did not hear the comments from the member for
Pilbara but he cares about this project dearly. It does not surprise me that he
was in the media championing another important project in his area. If it is
not in the media and in the community that he is talking about it, it is always
to ministers on this side of the chamber. He is constantly advocating for his
community to ensure that the people of the Pilbara get the very best, because
they deserve it. I want to commend the member for Pilbara and the work he does
behalf of the community in which he lives.
Obviously, as the member for North
West Central is aware, the Newman Hospital project is a longer term project, which will be subject to budget
deliberations. I cannot confirm for the member the time line that the member for Pilbara spoke of but, as the member for North West Central is aware,
it is a project on which we are very much focused and we will ensure it
receives the attention it needs in the time that it needs.
