The minister knows I am chairperson of the Canning River Regional Park Advisory Committee. The committee and I applauded the Gallop Government’s allocation of an extra $15.5 million earlier this year to the health and management of the Swan and Canning Rivers. What commitment has the federal Labor Party and Mark Latham made to supporting the State Government’s efforts to improve the health of our rivers now and into the future? Dr J.M. EDWARDS

I thank the member for the question and I also thank him for his work with the Canning River Regional Park Advisory Committee. I acknowledge all the groups in the Canning River region who are playing a magnificent role in improving the health and amenity of that river. I was delighted in January of this year when the Premier announced the Swan and Canning Rivers as our first heritage icon. In recognition of that and the esteem in which people hold these rivers we injected an extra $15 million into the Swan River Trust to carry out activities such as those engaged in by the member for Riverton. I was therefore delighted on Saturday when Mark Latham announced on behalf of the federal Labor Party that, if elected to national Government, he would inject $4.5 million over three years into the Swan River Trust’s river bank program. The river bank program is something we committed to in opposition, and I am delighted that we are now rolling it out in government. It is an excellent program. It involves working with local government, State Government and the community to improve the foreshore in the areas that are identified as priorities. To receive national recognition of that program and to have all three levels of government working together with the community on practical measures to improve the health of the river is a fantastic outcome. I applaud Mark Latham’s efforts on this issue, I applaud him for saying that he will ratify the Kyoto Protocol, and I look forward to a federal Labor Government.
