A WA parliamentary question regarding disaster relief for businesses in Carnarvon affected by Cyclone Steve, specifically inquiring about assistance similar to that provided after Cyclones Vance and Elaine, and a potential property acquisition program. The government responded that while direct grants weren't offered, subsidised loans were available, and a property acquisition program was rejected by owners.

The Minister Replied:
(1) & (2) The extent of the damage to businesses as a result of Cyclones Elaine and Vance was so severe that a special Trust Fund was set up by the State and Commonwealth to ensure that businesses and economies of those towns affected were able to recover. While there was disruption and some damage to businesses across the State as a result of Cyclone Steve, there was not the same extensive damage.
However, the Government recognised that assistance may be necessary for some of the affected businesses and approved an interest subsidised loan scheme similar to that approved for Cyclones Elaine and Vance. This was in addition to the personal hardship relief arrangements and the Carnarvon Farm Recovery Scheme.
(3) & (4) Consideration was given to a limited property acquisition option however, this option has been rejected by the property owners.
