Demersal fishing ban—Commercial fishing licences
1215. Hon Philip Scott to
the Minister for Fisheries:
I ask the following
in relation to the demersal fishing ban announced yesterday.
(1) How many commercial fishing licences will be
bought back by the government?
(2) How long will fishing licence holders need to
wait before they receive compensation for their licence?
(3) Other than buying back licences, is any
additional compensation available for businesses for their last revenue due to
the ban and, if yes, how do businesses access it?
(4) Why did the government not make the demersal fishing
ban an election policy earlier this year?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable
member for some notice of the question.
(1) A total of 76.
(2) The compensation process is defined under the Fisheries Adjustment Scheme Act 1987 , with
payments anticipated to commence in the second quarter of 2026.
(3) Payment of compensation will be based on the
buyback of licences or units of entitlement on licences for areas that are to
be permanently closed to commercial fishing.
(4) Updated stock assessments for demersal
scalefish were not received until mid-2025, after the last state election.
