1. Both the Department and I support the use of no-take areas where appropriate to protect fish species. Examples of no-take areas that have been declared under the powers vested with the Minister for Fisheries include: Point Quobba; locations around Rottnest Island and the Lancelin Lagoon Fish Habitat Protection area. The Minister for Fisheries on the advice of the Fisheries Department has previously agreed to the creation of no-take areas within Marine Reserves established under the Conservation and Land Management Act 1984. Examples of no-take areas in Marine Reserves include the Shark Bay Marine Park; the Marmion Marine Park, and the Ningaloo Marine Park. No fishing is allowed within the boundaries of the entire Hamelin Pool Nature Reserve in Shark Bay. 2. When examining proposals for the establishment of no-take areas in Marine Parks and other marine protected areas, eg Fish Habitat Protection Areas established under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994, I take into consideration: the benefits the proposal may provide for the marine environment and ecosystem; the possible effects of the proposal on the community, recreational fishing, the commercial fishing industry, pearling and aquaculture; the Marine Parks and Reserves Authority's Marine Issues Paper "No-take areas in Marine Management" which the Fisheries Department had some involvement in drafting.
