WARRAWEE WOMEN'S
REFUGE
366. Ms S.F. McGURK to the Minister for
Women's Interests:
I refer to the government-owned Warrawee Women's Refuge that
has been run by the City of Fremantle with considerable financial contributions
by the council. This refuge has been operating for over 40 years and last year
supported over 50 women and 60 children to safely escape violent situations.
(1) Why did the state government offer the
refuge only fixed funding over the next three years when costs are rising five per
cent a year and then expect the local council to increase its contribution?
(2) Is this funding not necessary to be
indexed so that Warrawee can continue to offer this important service?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for
Fremantle for the question. I request that the member put the question on
notice to the Minister for Child Protection. The Minister for Child Protection, Hon Helen
Morton , in the other place, has
responsibility for domestic violence and for the provision of services to our
domestic violence refuges, so I do not have that detail. If the member wants to
put that question on notice to the Premier in this house, I am sure that we can
get the answer to the member.
