CARBON STORAGE
962. Hon STEVE MARTIN to the minister representing the
Minister for Environment:
I refer to a recent article on ABC
news that makes claims that the carbon storage of state forests has not been
measured for some time.
(1) When were the last measurements
of carbon storage taken?
(2) Does the
government plan to measure carbon storage in the near future; and, if yes, when
will this take place; and, if not, why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following information is provided on behalf of
the Minister for Environment.
(1)–(2) Work
is underway to update the estimates of forest carbon provided in the draft Forest management plan 2014–2023 . This will draw upon the various
timber inventory and other datasets accrued since 2012 that can provide
measurements of above-ground woody biomass in state forests and timber
reserves, including plantations. This work is scheduled to inform the final
forest management plan 2024–2033 due next year.
