POLICE — YOUTH
STRATEGY
962. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to an article in the Great
Southern Herald of 4 June 2020 titled ''Modern cops double as youth
workers — Cops reap rewards of connecting with kids''.
(1) Is this initiative a formal
program?
(2) If yes to (1), what is it
called?
(3) Are there plans to extend this
to other Western Australian regions?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question. Noting that it was asked earlier this year, the
answer is current as of 16 June 2020. The following answer has been provided to
me by the Minister for Police.
The police officers involved in
this policing strategy are to be commended. The Western Australia Police Force
advises the following.
(1) The article
published in the Great Southern Herald of 4 June 2020 titled ''Modern
cops double as youth workers — Cops reap rewards of connecting with
kids'' refers to police officers from a number of police stations in the
great southern district actively engaging with young people. The practice of
engaging with young people in various forums, in particular those who may be at
risk of offending in the future, is part of a policing strategy and is not a formal
program.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) The policing strategy of
engaging with young people already exists across the state.
