I thank the member for the question. He will be very pleased
to have heard about the huge increase in investment that is going into his and
other regional electorates in the state out of this magnificent regional events
scheme. A total of $750 000 a year goes into this scheme, not all from royalties
for regions; $450 000 from royalties for regions—the member is not
listening to me—and $300 000 from consolidated revenue.
The SPEAKER :
Member for West Swan, I call you to order for the first time.
Dr K.D. HAMES : The
addition of that $450 000 has made an enormous difference to the capacity of
the scheme to support regional events in the state. As members know, we plan
through Tourism WA to significantly increase tourism numbers and investment in
tourism with funds that we have gained from increased tourism in the state.
Just to let members know, nine events of the total of 54 will receive funding
for the first time.
The SPEAKER :
Members for West Swan and Maylands, that is enough!
Dr K.D. HAMES : The
events include the Porongurup Wine Festival, the Lake Argyle Swim, the Mullewa
Muster and Rodeo, the Onslow Rodeo, the Cossack Art Awards, the Kambarang South
West Aboriginal Gourmet Experience—a very good event—the
Toodyay Picnic Race Day, the 2015 Beverley Heroic, and the Campervan and
Motorhome Club of Australia Amazing Albany National Rally. All those
organisations will get new funds for new events, but we will also continue to
support long-term popular events such as the Kickstarters Gascoyne Dash, the
Nannup Music Festival, the Grapes and Gallops Festival—I am sure the
member for Perth will be keen on that one—the Western Australian
Goldfields PGA Championship and the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival. That is
only a small number of 54 events across the state that are being funded by this
regional events scheme. It is a magnificent extrapolation of what was happening
by governments in the past.
Ms M.M. Quirk : I
like a good extrapolation.
Dr K.D. HAMES : It
is a pity we could not extrapolate the member for Girrawheen a bit further that
way!
These are magnificent events, they are strongly supported by
this state government and are great for regional Western Australia.
