C-series trains—Unscheduled maintenance
916. Hon Steve Martin to
the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Transport:
I refer to the minister's
extraordinary answer to question on notice 588, in which I asked for the number
of instances of unscheduled maintenance that have occurred since the C-series
trains launched, per railcar set, and for an identifying number for each of the
railcar sets, to which the minister responded, "Once again, the Liberal
Party is keen to attack local railcar manufacturing", and then provided,
once again, no answer to the question.
(1) Is it the position of the government that the
asking of written parliamentary questions seeking straightforward factual data
within a month's notice is an "attack"?
(2) Can the minister please either:
(a) provide an explanation of why instances of
unscheduled maintenance cannot be provided;
(b) explain why it is not in the public interest
to do so; or
(c) provide the data requested in question on
notice 588?

I thank the honourable
member for some notice of the question and provide the following answer on
behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(2) I think it reasonable to infer the
member's position on locally made trains, given his consistent desire to
discredit and discount Made in WA C-series trains and therefore the people
employed to build those trains. Unscheduled maintenance is very broad in nature
and could range from significant items to minor corrective actions, like
replacing a globe.
