What a silly question. It is hard to believe that the member for Rockingham was
actually a minister and a member of cabinet. I would have thought that he would
have actually learnt that these details are announced in the budget, which the
Treasurer will do on budget day.
Mr M. McGowan : You
said they were happening now, a month ago. Right now!
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Happening now?
Mr M. McGowan : You
said a month ago—right now they are being cut.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Yes, because the process of —
Mr M. McGowan interjected.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : No, no, no; listen, please.
Mr
M. McGowan : Were you misleading?
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : You do not grasp much, so concentrate. Be quiet and
concentrate! They are happening now. In other words —
Mr
M. McGowan : You are arrogant. You are a very arrogant man.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Be quiet and concentrate.
Mr
M. McGowan : Very arrogant!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Yes, look to the stars. Look to the press gallery. Look to
your mirror with the lights around it. Look to your $600 000 look at me—''Look
at me!'' What the member for Rockingham needs to do is —
Mr
R.H. Cook : Keep it going! Just keep doing that. That is good.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
What the member for Rockingham needs to do —
Ms R. Saffioti interjected.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Oh, $170 000 from the back—thank you. The member for Rockingham —
Mr R.H. Cook : Come
on; keep it going.
Mr C.J. BARNETT : I
am not going to bother. What is the point?
The SPEAKER : Thank
you, members.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
The question was asked of me.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Hopefully the Leader of the Opposition wants an answer to this question. I
presume he does. Once again, I suggest to members on both sides that I do not
want any interjections. That applies to both sides in this place. I would like
the Premier to answer the question that the Leader of the Opposition has asked.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
And as I said, it is a silly question. When I was interviewed—obviously
I do not recall saying that, but I accept that is what I would have said—yes,
that was the process of drafting the budget when right then we were going
through making cuts to programs and delaying capital works. That is the context
in which the answer was given. It is as simple as that.
