FORRESTDALE BUSINESS PARK — METROPOLITAN
REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
412. Mrs G.J. GODFREY to the Minister for Planning:
Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority projects are supporting
economic development outside the CBD and I am aware that the minister made an announcement
today that provides a strong example of this. Can the minister update the house
on this announcement, relating to the development of Armadale?

I thank the member for the question. It is the case that the
Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority has responsibility for development in CBD
projects and projects that are well outside the CBD—particularly in the
Subiaco, Midland and Armadale areas, and soon in Scarborough. The development
of the Forrestdale business park in Armadale is part of a long-term plan to
provide a substantial increase in the amount of industrial land in the area to
encourage economic and employment development in the Armadale region and the
south east metropolitan area. I was very pleased to be involved in the
announcement, made earlier this afternoon, of Hitachi Construction Machinery
Australia's relocation of its facilities from Welshpool to the
Forrestdale business park.
Dr
A.D. Buti : A good decision!
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : A good decision, indeed! It is close to the electorate of
Armadale, and actually in the electorate of Darling Range, so it will be of
benefit to people in that part of the metropolitan area.
The company has acquired a 10-hectare site and will undertake
a $100 million development, which will provide a facility about four times the
size of the company's current facility in Welshpool. That is a vote of
confidence in the economy of Western Australia and also in the development of
the Forrestdale business park precinct. This is a very significant announcement
and development for the Armadale region; it will provide for a workforce in the
area of about 350 people. Of course, many of those will be relocated from
Welshpool, but ultimately, I am sure, it will lead to flow-on benefits for
employment in the Armadale region.
The site chosen by Hitachi is to the west of Tonkin Highway;
it is close to the highway, and therefore it is very good from the point of
view of allowing for heavy machinery transport. The development will occur over
the next two years. This development comes in addition to approvals of about $70
million in private sector investment that have been granted over the last 12
months and about 170 planning application approvals that have led to the
development of additional residential and business projects in the Wungong,
Champion Lakes and Seville Grove areas, as well as the Forrestdale business
park.
Ultimately, we expect this area to accommodate up to 700
industrial lots, with the potential to create more than 12 000 jobs. I
congratulate Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia, the Metropolitan
Redevelopment Authority and the City of Armadale for achieving this outcome.
