LITHIUM MINING —

14. Mr D.T. REDMAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
Premier, in the spirit of your response and clear support of Collie, would it
not have been easier to just ensure that Collie-based contractors won lucrative
firefighting appliance contracts, rather than robbing jobs from one regional
community to pay another?

In the history of bizarre segues
that takes the cake! What that member does not understand is when we provided
the contract for the new build of fire appliances, we ensured that over 30 per cent
of it went to Collie. The member does not seem to comprehend that. We have
ensured that the future of the manufacturing of those vehicles will stay in Collie.
That is what we did. As I explained to the member here before, but he does not
seem to be getting it, it was an open tender process. As part of that, we
ensured that a component of the work would be done in Collie, and that is
guaranteeing that a strong, vibrant Western Australian company is establishing
operations in Collie. It will ensure manufacturing there, and then it will be a
base for repairs, maintenance and all of that for emergency services vehicles
all over the south west. That is what we have done. Had that member been in
office, he would have sat there doing nothing like he did when he was there.
That is what we have done. We are supporting the community in Collie. I want to
see people in Collie have a prosperous future. Clearly, the National Party does
not.
