I refer to the numbers of medical graduates from Western Australian universities each year and ask: (a) how many places will be available for internships in the 2014–2015 , 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 years and how do those figures align with the anticipated number of graduates; and (b) has your department undertaken any modelling on the expected impact on placement of interns in Western Australia if the proposed Curtin University Medical School proceeds, and if not, why not?

(a) 304 internships in 2014-2015 and 310 internships in 2015-2016 are funded. The indicative number of internships required for 2016-2017 is 307. The modelling considers and aligns internship funding with the expected number of Commonwealth supported graduates of WA medical schools.
(b) The proposed Curtin University medical school is a complex issue and the Department of Health (DOH) is not able to model several key factors without extensive further work by DOH and Curtin University.
