I refer to Tourism WA’s current review of tourist accommodation development, and I ask -
(1) Has the Government identified strategic tourism sites for future development?
(2) If yes to (1), what sites have been identified as strategic tourism sites?
(3) As many of the State’s iconic tourist attractions are found in Western Australia’s unspoilt natural environment, will the Minister guarantee that future tourism infrastructure development will be balanced with genuine environmental protection concerns?
(4) Does the Government support the idea of designating major tourism developments as ‘developments of state significance’, so as to bypass problematic local council and other planning approval processes?
(5) Does the Government support the use of strata title schemes and mixed development schemes to develop new tourism accommodation product?
(6) Does the Government plan to remove the 25 percent rule in terms of the percentage of residential accommodation allowed in tourism zoned development sites?
(7) If yes to (6), what regulation will the Government put in place to reduce the risk of conflict between the interests of developers, operators, permanent residents, local communities and the needs of leisure tourists in strata title schemes?

(1) - (2) These questions should be addressed to the relevant Minister - Minister for Planning.
(3) Yes. Tourism Western Australia and the Department of Environment and Conservation jointly released the Naturebank program, which is the identification of sites in protected areas for low impact tourist accommodation opportunities. Given that the main attraction of these areas is the natural environment, any development will be required to meet strict controls to ensure these projects do not detract from the quality of this environment.
(4) - (7) These questions should be addressed to the relevant Minister - Minister for Planning.
