I have a supplementary question. Given the minister’s answer and his statement on Radio 6PR that the matter was not raised with him, will he now admit that he misled the public of Western Australia? Dr van der Mye did tell the minister that he would be travelling back to Melbourne on a regular basis and yet the minister said the opposite on the radio. Mr E.S. RIPPER

The matter of the extent of Stephen van der Mye’s travel was not raised with me at the meeting. I was of the view that, in due course, Stephen van der Mye would be relocating his family to Perth. I understood that it was not wise to remove children from school in the middle of a school term. I understand that Dr Stephen van der Mye and his family are discussing the best solution in the interests of all family members. I will return to the main point, which is whether Dr Stephen van der Mye is competently performing his role as Managing Director of Western Power. The answer is that he is doing so. As Minister for Energy, I believe that, as does the board of directors and, I am sure, many other people as well. What he does with his private time, and how he interacts with his family is not part of the business of the Leader of the Opposition. The SPEAKER: I call to order the member for Nedlands, the Leader of the National Party and the member for Warren-Blackwood.
